Top Five Reasons I am a Christian

There are literally thousands of reasons why I am a Christian – thousands of tiny pointers, intellectual arguments, and life experiences that have shaped my journey towards Christ.  I am like a comet pulled inexorably on a path by stars and planets and galaxies, some remote, some near, all with different levels of influence; but all important in their own way in guiding me towards my Maker.

As that terrible metaphor no doubt makes abundantly clear (I mean, a comet actually doesn’t end up anywhere, right?…it just goes in circles), it is hard for me to define, in some simple way, the main reasons why I am a Christian.  And yet, sometimes, I think there is value in forcing oneself to brass tacks.  Why exactly do I believe what I believe?  This week I, very simply and without elaboration, state the five primary reasons why I am a Christian.  Here they are:

  1. Jesus is God.
  2. Jesus came down from Heaven.
  3. Jesus died on a cross for my sins.
  4. Jesus rose from the dead.
  5. It is found by of the other names like Kamagra, Kamagra oral jelly, Zenegra, Silagra, Zenegra, next levitra uk, Caverta, and Forzest etc. all of the above can be found in ayurvedic pills to eradicate excess weight InstaSlim capsules. 6. Jesus will one day come again.

Nah, I’m just yanking your chain.  Those aren’t reasons.  In actual fact, this has been a test of the Apologetic Professor’s Intelligence Detection System.  If you are not infuriated by that list of reasons, then you are not – yet – a thinking person.  Or at least you were not thinking when you read that list.  You see, that is not a list of reasons why I am a Christian…that is a list of the primary Christian beliefs themselves.  I do most definitely believe those things, but it is a different question to ask why I believe them.

And yet: That list is a parable for how people often argue these days.  They mistake their own beliefs for actual reasons for their beliefs.  They declare by fiat that their beliefs are true, as if that is an argument that their beliefs are true.  Both sides do it. The most common instantiation on my side is to declare that the Bible is true because…the Bible says it is true.  The most common instantiation on the other side is to declare that miracles do not happen because…miracles do not happen.  Well, you should be annoyed by that kind of argument, just like you should have been annoyed by my listing the Christian Creed itself as the reason I believe the Christian Creed.

I can feel the incredible disappointment of the masses – by which I mean my mother-in-law and my forlorn hand puppet, Ebeneezer Grumpyknuckles – that I did not list my real reasons.  But do not worry…next week I actually am going to list the top 5 reasons I am a Christian. Calm down, forlorn hand puppet Ebeneezer!

  1. I am shocked beyond measure to learn that Christians–good, decent, devout, intelligent Christians–engage in the cruel sport of “chain-yanking”. Next, I suppose they’ll get to “leg-pulling,” and who knows where they’ll stop…

Regardless, I look forward to the list of your actual reasons. And perhaps a post on miracles, too? I don’t believe in them, you know, because…well, I just don’t, and it would be a miracle if anyone could persuade me to. (Meanwhile, I’m reading a fun little book called “Why Does the World Exist?” by Jim Holt; he calls it “An Existential Detective Story,” and it’s chock-full of cosmological/philosophical/theological speculation…fun stuff, and highly recommended.)

  2. I simply wished to say thanks all over again. I am not sure the things that I might have worked on in the absence of those thoughts contributed by you concerning such subject. Completely was a depressing case in my view, but understanding a expert manner you treated that made me to leap for contentment. I am happy for your help and then have high hopes you are aware of a powerful job you have been doing teaching people today by way of your web site. I am sure you’ve never encountered any of us.
